Dental Extraction Forceps Overview

Dental extraction forceps are surgical instruments designed to grasp, hold, and remove teeth from the alveolar socket after the surrounding periodontal ligament has been severed or loosened. Each forceps design is tailored to the specific anatomical shape, root configuration, and location of the target tooth (maxillary vs. mandibular).

Maxillary (Upper) Forceps

  • Upper Universal / Premolar Forceps: Feature slightly curved beak tips that align parallel to the root axis, suitable for extracting upper anterior teeth and bicuspids.

  • Upper Anteriors (Straight) Forceps: Designed with completely straight handles and beaks to access upper central and lateral incisors as well as canines.

  • Upper Molar Forceps (Left & Right): Asymmetrical beak design—one side features a smooth, broad blade for the palatal root, while the other side has a pointed beak to engage the buccal bifurcation.

  • Upper Cowhorn / Bayonet Forceps: Feature slender, parallel-curved tips resembling a bayonet, designed to access upper third molars or isolated upper root fragments.

Mandibular (Lower) Forceps

  • Lower Universal / Premolar Forceps: Feature a right-angle bend between the handle and beaks, allowing access to lower incisors, canines, and premolars.

  • Lower Molar Forceps (Standard): Feature pointed, symmetrical beak tips on both sides to engage the buccal and lingual bifurcations of lower two-rooted molars.

  • Lower Cowhorn Forceps (#23): Designed with deep, hook-like pointed tips that wedge directly into the bifurcation of lower molars, using a squeeze-and-rock motion to elevate the tooth.

  • Lower Root Forceps: Feature narrow, opposing beaks that meet at the tip to grip broken down lower roots or slender incisors.

Key Structural Anatomy

  • Beaks: Tailored to fit the neck or root surface of specific teeth; can be smooth or serrated for an improved grip.

  • Hinge (Joint): Connects the handle and beaks, transferring hand pressure directly to the working tip.

  • Handles: Serrated or textured stainless steel handles designed for maximum tactile feedback, grip leverage, and comfortable hand positioning.

  • Material & Maintenance: Constructed from surgical-grade stainless steel, fully autoclavable, and resistant to corrosion.
